Grandfather was a man of small stature, a very humble person and a God-fearing man. I do not remember my grandmother, his first wife, for she died two years before I was born. The grandma I knew was his second wife, Betje Diepstra, who died Feb. 23, 1907.
These elders were born in the Province of Groningen, Netherlands, and later emigrated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the greater part of their descendants still reside. Son of Hidde Alberts BOSSCHER (see also IV.1) and Martje Jans DIJKSTRA.

VI.26 Hidde BOSSCHER, Boerenknecht te Waarden (gem. Grijpskerk), born on 05-02-1852 in De Waard, died on 02-06-1928 in Lucas, Michigan, USA at the age of 76. Hidde ligt begraven op Richland Cemetery North, Missaukee County, Michigan, USA. Hidde emigreerde in 1880 naar de Verenigde Staten. Hij vertrok vanuit Rotterdam en kwam op 15-04-1880 aan in New York.

Hidde Bosscher was born in the Province of Groningen, Netherlands, on the 5th day of February 1852; died June 2, 1923; married Bregtje Sevenga, April 26, 1873 at Burum, Groningen. Two daughters were born to them in the Netherlands. Menke was born June 6, 1874, and Tetje (“Tena”) was born January 26,1877. After this the family moved to “Amerika” and settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Due to poverty caused by the great depression of the seventies, they moved back and forth from the Netherlands to America at least two times, returning to the Netherlands the first time October 1876. Two of their children became sick with scarlet fever and died, one June 18 and the other June 20, 1881. Both were buried on the same day, while the parents were quarantined, thus not being able to attend the funeral. These two children lie buried in the extreme southwest part of the Hall Street cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Father was a cabinet maker with the John Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand rapids for at least eleven years. He joined the Alpine Avenue Christian Reformed Church, where he served as elder and deacon. May 1, 1891, saw the family move to Richland Township near Lucas, Michigan, where he moved on to a forty acre patch of virgin timber. I well remember that time, although only four years old. A train trip took us to Cadillac, Michigan, and from there to Lucas by train, arriving after dark. We spent our first night with the family of the Rev. Wm. VanVliet. The next day we moved to a little one room log house on a small clearing adjacent to the forty acres of timber that Father had bought. From this home Father walked every day to the site he had picked out to build a house. He had to blaze the trees in order to find the same spot again. With long days and hard labor he succeeded to finish the home to such an extent that we could live in it.
Timber had to be cleared to make way for crops that had to be planted in order to make a living. Mother, too, slaved and worked hard. After a few cows were acquired and a few chickens raised, she would walk to Cadillac, making a round trip of 14 miles every week, with a market basket of butter and eggs on each arm, which were traded for groceries to supply a hungry family. It was a hard grind and at the end of two years they were about ready to return to Grand Rapids, but a Provident Hand saw them through the difficulties through which they must travel. My oldest sister, Tena, although only in her early teens, had to work out to supplement the income. After much toil they were able to make a go of it and rear their children in the fear of the Lord, for this was their heart’s desire. Jacob vertrok 1879-1880 naar Amerika en keerde voor zijn huwelijk met Jiltje Wiersma terug naar Nederland.
De kinderen werden geboren en nadat Mamie BOSSCHER was geboren, vertrok men voorgoed naar America, alwaar Jacob op 29 oktober 1898 tot Amerikaans staatsburger werd genaturaliseerd.
Rhyne Bosscher: After some time children were born, Jacob Rendert and Mencke. Shortly after Mamie was born, father and mother and family sailed for America and arrived on the west side of Grand Rapids, affiliating with the Alpine Avenue Christian Reformed Church. (According to church records of the Alpine Avenue Church, he arrived May 10, 1888, and left there to join Eastern Avenue Church on February 20, 1889. – J.H.B.) In September 1888 he moved to a home of Joe Leekstra on Diamond Street; leaving there we moved to Bemis Street. Father worked at the furniture factory for some time, after which we moved to Jones Street, now Delaware Street. After this, Father worked at the Oak Hill Cemetery for some time, then he thought he would like to be a farmer, so we moved on a farm near Grandville and lived there for about one and a half years and then moved back to Grand Rapids to what was called Oakdale park, where we lived until both Father and Mother died. Father became a naturalized citizen of America October 29, 1898. Father and Mother raised their family the hard way, but later years somewhat eased the situation, but ill health soon took both of them and certainly we can say with the other brothers and sisters we certainly miss a grand old Father and Mother who served the Lord. We came to America April 28, 1878. It took us 21 days to span the Atlantic. Being a stranger in a strange land, father had to fins work as best he could. He found some seasonal work with Mr. A. Lindemulder, after which he worked for the firm Jeltes, Dregges and Co., as well as for the Nelson Matter Furniture Company. Perhaps getting tired of working for others, he tried a new venture by way of selling fruit and vegetables for a season. The Steketee Dry Goods Company offered him a job, which he undertook, but not being able to stand indoor work because of his health, he decided to sell dry goods from a wagon; this was the beginning of a small dry goods store which was located on East Fulton Street. After this, he tried farming for a few years and in later life was employed by Joseph Brewer on a farm near Plainfield for several years, after which he moved to Grand Rapids and became janitor at the Baldwin Christian School.
During all these years he took an active share in Kingdom work as a Sunday School teacher and deacon; he also spent many years as an elder in the churches of Dennis Avenue and Plainfield. After retiring, he affiliated with the Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church. After Mother’s death he spent the remainder of his life in the Holland Home until he passed away January 22, 1949. Son of Jacob Hiddes BOSSCHER (see also V.11) and Menke Jacobs van der MOLEN.

I’m sure I cannot write too much of a history of my mother, except that she came to this country with her father and Uncle Jake’s and Uncle Albert’s families. She was married to my father within one or two weeks after their arrival. She never was very strong in body, but her faith was quite exceptional. She died in the blessed hope of belonging to her Saviour and longed to be with Him. She was 39 years of age when she died. She chose her own funeral text, which was taken from the 3rd chapter of Lamentations, the 24th verse; “The Lord is my portion saith my soul, therefore will I hope in Him.” Her favorite verse of the Holland Psalm was based on Psalm 73 verses 23 and 24, which, translated into the Holland language, the first line reads: “K zal dan gedurig bij u zijn.” She made her own funeral arrangements and requested that the Rev. J.W. Brink, who already had accepted a call to Bethany, Muskegon, preach the funeral sermon. To this he consented. She died of cancer, was bedridden about a year, and literally wasted away to about 50 pounds. Daughter of Jacob Hiddes BOSSCHER (see also V.11) and Menke Jacobs van der MOLEN.
